Ohio State undrafted free agents tracker: Buckeyes who signed after 2024 NFL Draft

Staff reports
Columbus Dispatch

The 2024 NFL draft is complete.

Four former Ohio State players found their NFL homes during the seven-round draft: Wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr., defensive tackle Mike Hall Jr., tight end Cade Stover and linebacker Tommy Eichenberg.

But a few former Buckeyes are still finding homes.

Players such as running back Miyan Williams, offensive lineman Matt Jones and wide receiver Xavier Johnson were on a list of undrafted free agents that were targeted by NFL teams in the hours after the draft.

Here's where each former undrafted Ohio State player is ending up:

Ohio State undrafted free agents

Nov 18, 2023; Columbus, Ohio, USA;
Ohio State Buckeyes safety Josh Proctor (41) tackles Minnesota Golden Gophers running back Jordan Nubin (30) during the second half of their game on Saturday, Nov. 18, 2023 at Ohio Stadium.

Josh Proctor, safety, Jacksonville Jaguars

Steele Chambers signed with the Detroit Lions.

Proctor had a rollercoaster of a career at Ohio State. Tabbed as a budding star as a freshman, Proctor started the 2021 season as a starter. But that year ended when he broke his leg in the second game against Oregon. He began the 2022 opener against Notre Dame as a starter but was benched after missing an early tackle and didn't regain his job all season.

He persevered, though, earned a starting job last year and finally put it all together. He has range and can be a jarring tackler. He had 47 tackles and eight pass breakups. Proctor intercepted one pass, which he returned for a touchdown. His hands are an issue because he dropped several potential interceptions.

Ohio State linebacker Steele Chambers' interception was one of four turnovers the Buckeyes forced against Western Kentucky.

Steele Chambers, linebacker, Detroit Lions

Steele Chambers signed with the Detroit Lions.

Moving to linebacker after joining Ohio State as a running back, Chambers was a three-year starter for the Buckeyes' defense and was a two-time All-Big Ten honorable mention honoree. He led the Buckeyes with 83 tackles in 2023.

Sept. 9, 2023; Columbus, Oh., USA;
Ohio State Buckeyes offensive lineman Matthew Jones (55) lines up during the first half of Saturday's NCAA Division I football game against the Youngstown State Penguins at Ohio Stadium.

Matt Jones, offensive lineman, Miami Dolphins

Matt Jones signed with the Miami Dolphins.

After four years as a versatility option at both guard spots and at center, Jones was a two-year starter at right guard where he allowed one sack.

Nov 25, 2023; Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA; Ohio State Buckeyes wide receiver Xavier Johnson (0) walks off the field in the final seconds of the NCAA football game against the Michigan Wolverines at Michigan Stadium. Ohio State lost 30-24.

Xavier Johnson, wide receiver, Buffalo Bills

Xavier Johnson signed with the Buffalo Bills.

A 6-foot-1, 210-pound athlete, Johnson found his way into the rotation at running back and wide receiver and multiple special teams units after joining the program as a walk on.

Oct 21, 2023; Columbus, Ohio, USA; Ohio State Buckeyes running back Miyan Williams (3) runs around Penn State Nittany Lions linebacker Kobe King (41) during the NCAA football game at Ohio Stadium.

Miyan Williams, running back, unsigned

In four years at Ohio State, Williams averaged 6 yards per carry and scored 20 touchdowns. In 2023, he was limited to 158 rushing yards on 49 carries, and was eventually shut down after being sidelined for eight of his final 16 games due to osteochondritis in his right knee.
